Today we retro-fitted a 4th axis to a Dugard Eco 1000 VMC with Siemens 828D control and Sinamics drives. This was not a straightforward task, this machine had never had a 4th axis and had absolutely no interface preparation whatsoever.
The 4th axis was a Detron with a non drive cliq Heidenhain motor. Firstly to allow the control to communicate and recognise the motor, a SMC20 module was fitted, all i/o wired to a military connector to roof of machine as was encoder to allow quick connection & disconnection for when 4th axis is not in use, a custom interface wiring harness was built to connect from sockets on machine down to the Detron 4th axis unit.
Next the PLC on the machine was modified to interpret the clamp / unclamp signals correctly. The base firmware of the machine had to be updated to allow full operational functionality of the 4th axis, this included updating various Machine datas & option bits. Finally after being fully function tested, a complete backup was made of the System CF Card, NC, PLC, HMI and Drive data.
All of the work was carried out by Control CNC Services, as challenging as it was probably one of the most rewarding jobs we’ve ever completed, to see it producing components makes the effort worthwhile.
